Subaru . How to Wire a Flex-a-Lite FanA typical engine is cooled with a fan that is mounted to the engine itself; the fan runs while the engine is turned on. An electric fan negates the need for a factory-installed fan, and allows the engine to gain horsepower while also cooling the car more efficiently. Installing one is a win-win situation, and can be done in just a few hours. In this example, the project vehicle is a 1998 Chevrolet pickup and a Flex-A-Lite Model 30 fan, but the process is similar for many other Flex-a-Lite and other brands of electric fans. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Flex-a-Lite Model 30 electric fan Flex-a-Lite Model 30 electric fan control box Switch 18-gauge wire, 25 feet Inline fuse 12-volt test light Open-end wrench set Blue female spade connectors Wire cutters Wire crimpers Wire strippers Blue butt connectors Drill with Phillips head attachment Self-tapping screws Blue ring terminalSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Locate the control box on the cooling fan. This is usually at the top of the fan shroud, bolted to the assembly. 2 Turn the key in the ignition to the "On" position, and turn on the air conditioning. Probe the two wires going into the A/C compressor on the engine using the 12-volt test light to determine which wire is the positive wire. When the light glows, you've found the right wire. 3 Run the positive wire from the air conditioning to the 3-way connector provided with the electric fan, using the 18-gauge wire. The other end of the 3-way connector should connect to the "C" post on the control box by crimping a blue spade connector to the end of the wire and pushing it onto the "C" post. 4 Run a section of the 18-gauge wire to the battery and cut it to length using the wire cutters. 5 Connect the wire to the inline fuse wiring using the wire crimpers and blue butt connectors. 6 Crimp a blue spade connector to one end of the battery wires, using the wire crimpers. You want to place the spade connector on the "B" terminal on the control box. 7 Connect the other end of the inline fuse to the battery terminal, using the open-end wrench. 8 Run a section of the 18-gauge wire to the interior of the vehicle and cut it to length, using the wire cutters. On the other end of the wire, crimp a blue spade connector to the end, using the wire crimpers, and place the spade terminal on the "M" post on the control box. 9 Connect the interior lead that you just ran into the cab to the top post of the switch, using a blue spade connector and the wire crimpers. This is going to allow you to manually turn on the fans. Step by Step : 10 Run a section of wire from the bottom post on the switch to a solid ground. This is generally a piece of metal on the dash. Connect the wire to the switch, using a blue spade connector and the wire crimpers. Step by Step : 11 Crimp a blue ring terminal to the end of that wire, using the wire crimpers, and secure the ring terminal to the metal ground source, using the drill and a self-tapping drill bit. Step by Step : 12 Probe the wiring around the switch to find a 12-volt source using the test light. If you want the fan to be able to run without the vehicle running, you can hook this wire up to a constant 12-volt source. If you want it to only turn on when the vehicle is running, probe for a ignition source by probing the wire with the test light and turning the key to the "On" position, then back to "Off" position. If the light turns on and off with the ignition, then you've found a switched ignition source. Step by Step : 13 Run a section of wire to the middle post on the switch and crimp on a blue spade connector, then push the wire onto the switch. Run the other section to the power source you found in Step 12, using a blue butt connectors, the wire cutters, wire strippers and wire crimpers. Step by Step : 14 Go under the hood again, and run a section of wire from the "G" post on the control box to a solid ground source. Crimp a blue spade connector on one end of the wire and push the terminal onto the "G" post, and crimp a ring terminal to the other end. Step by Step : 15 Screw the ring terminal to the ground source using the drill and self-tapping screws. Step by Step : 16 Run a section of wire from the "+" terminal on the control block to the fuse block. Crimp a blue spade connector on one end of the wire, and push the terminal onto the "+" post. Step by Step : 17 Strip 1/2-inch off the end of the wire, and wrap it around the screwed positive terminal that goes into the fuse box.
Subaru . How to Replace a Compressor in a Car Air ConditionerAutomotive air conditioners use a compressor to circulate freon through the evaporator and condenser. This compressor can wear out and require replacement, usually due to a lack of lubricant or worn bearings. The average backyard mechanic can replace a compressor in about an hour. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Screwdrivers Line wrench Step by Step : 1 Evacuate the air-conditioning system by taking it to a garage or oil change center, as they get compensated for collecting freon. The system should have a little freon as possible when working on the compressor. 2 Remove the positive terminal bolt on the battery to disconnect power to the vehicle. Turn it counterclockwise, then store it away from the battery. 3 Remove the freon lines from the compressor by turning their line bolts counterclockwise, then pulling them free of the openings in the compressor casing. The lines may hiss slightly, but this is only latent vacuum from the evacuation. Store the lines away from the compressor. 4 Disengage the drive belt from the compressor by pushing firmly onto the tension pulley arm, then sliding the belt out from underneath the idle pulley. Release the tension pulley; this will allow enough slack to slide the belt from the compressor pulley wheel. 5 Disconnect the compressor from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug from the compressor terminal. 6 Remove the compressor by turning the mount nuts counterclockwise while holding the mount bolt heads firmly with a socket wrench. Slide the mount bolts out and manipulate the compressor from the mount arms. 7 Replace the compressor by sliding it into position into the mount arms, then slide the bolts into place and turn them clockwise into the mount nuts. Reconnect the adapter plug to the terminal. 8 Slide the belt onto the compressor pulley wheel with the grooved side down. Press the tension pulley arm and slide the belt back underneath the idle pulley. Release the tension pulley, and the belt will tighten. 9 Reconnect the freon lines by turning the line bolts in a clockwise direction, checking the gaskets inside each line before insertion. Step by Step : 10 Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt in a clockwise direction. Step by Step : 11 Fill the system with freon by taking it to the collection facility or using an at-home kit. Follow all instructions, and do not allow the can of freon to be punctured without a valve or get overheated. Tips & Warnings Use the replacement of the compressor as an excellent opportunity to convert the system from R-12 to 134a type coolant. Add the proper amount of lubricant to the system. Use extreme caution when handling canned freon.
